GALESBURG, Illinois — Park officials in Galesburg were forced to close the Lake Storey beach Wednesday due to a sewer pump station overflow caused by recent heavy rains.
Water samples have been sent out for testing, and officials are hopeful the beach will be able to re-open for the Labor Day weekend, said Tony Oligney-Estill, the parks and recreation director.
"We are hopeful the test results come back negative, but we just want to be safe," he said.
Although the beach is closed, fishing and other recreational activities are still allowed at the lake, he added. All fishing is catch-and-release, he said.
Lake Storey water will continue to be tested until it is determined it is safe for swimming.
