CHICAGO -- Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson has moved to fire five police officers for their roles in the controversial Laquan McDonald shooting.
Johnson filed administrative charges Tuesday seeking to remove the officers, including Jason Van Dyke, who shot McDonald 16 times.
Janet Mondragon, Daphne Sebastian and Ricardo Viramontes as well as Sgt. Stephen Franko are the others who face potential firing.
On Oct. 20, 2014, Chicago police responded to reports of a man with a knife in his hand. They confronted McDonald on the 4100 block of South Pulaski Road, who appeared to walk away. That's when Van Dyke opened fire, killing the 17-year-old.
Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder in McDonald's killing after dash-cam video was released of the incident. The initial police report cleared Van Dyke of any wrongdoing.
Van Dyke pleaded not guilty.
The video's release prompted several protests around Chicago, and prompted an investigation into Chicago police by the U.S. Justice Department.
