DAVENPORT, Iowa-- The half acre land across the street from the Third Missionary Baptist Church in Davenport will not be vacant much longer.

Pastors from the National Baptist Convention announced a new initiative Tuesday, August 30, to turn that vacant into a High Tunnel garden, a place where the church can grow their own fruits and vegetables.

For Pastor Rogers Kirk Jr, this is also an opportunity for kids in the community to help.

"There are many kids within our intercity community that don't know anything about (farming). We are in an agreement that will bring kids from classes to come over and watch. To bring teachers and talk about growing food and how it is important," said Pastor Kirk.

The $7,000 dollar project is made possible though a grant awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture.

The USDA, High Tunnel grant money is available to 23 other parishes in the Quad Cities.

Construction for High Tunnel garden at Third Missionary Baptist Church will begin in September.
