The 22nd annual Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix will be kicking off Sept, 3-4.

There will be Karts going up to 100 miles per hour in the worlds largest Karting Street race, and it’s all taking place in the downtown District.

130 race teams from coast to coast as well as Ontario, British Columbia and Bermuda will compete.

This is the first year with Mediacom as the races’ naming rights sponsor.

“It’s been a proven successful event,” says Roger Ruthhart, president of the Rock Island Grand Prix.

Talking about his optimism for the events turnout this year, he said “there is no reason why people can’t participate because it’s a free event.”

The events will start Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m. and end around 5 p.m.

On Saturday there will be practice with heat races beginning at 1:15 p.m.  Racers will run 10 lap sprints to earn points which will determine starting positions for Sunday Finals.

Sunday’s opening ceremonies will be at 10:40 a.m. with kids’ autograph session at 10:55 a.m.  General admission is free but daily pit passes are $10.

There will be Grand Prix marketplace vendors opening up at 10 a.m. and outdoor music on the east plaza stage starting at 8 p.m. featuring The Travoltas (admission charged to attend).
