SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Brock Turner, the former Stanford University swimmer convicted of sexually assaulting a woman and sentenced to six months in jail, will be released from the Santa Clara County Jail after serving half his sentence this Friday.
The Turner case drew widespread attention and criticism due to the leniency of his sentence as well as a statement given by Turner’s father during the trial that his son had already paid “a steep price … for 20 minutes of action.”
This was in contrast to one of the victim’s impact statements that decried the lenient sentence. She described how the attack left her “closed off, angry, self-deprecating, tired, irritable, empty.” Buzzfeed published her full letter, where she says she was disappointed by his sentencing.
According to the Times story, early releases in California are common due to the state’s prison realignment. Turner was awarded day-for-day time off for good behavior, making him eligible after serving three of the six months to which he was sentenced. Based on the nature of his crimes, Turner could have been sentenced to up to 14 years in prison. Prosecutors sought a six-year term.
