Hatchet-wielding Des Moines woman injures police officer

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines woman is in the Polk County Jail after police say she injured an officer called to respond to an incident involving a hatchet.

Jennifer Lee Simonsen, 34, is charged with two counts of assault use/display of a weapon and one count of assault causing injury on a police officer. She also had a previous drug-related arrest warrant out of Madison County.

Police were called to 2900 Cottage Grove around 9:30 a.m. Saturday about a woman threatening her neighbors with a hatchet.

Police say Simonsen became violent after she asked to borrow a phone charger from a neighbor and the neighbor said she didn’t have one. Simonsen retrieved a hatchet from her apartment and came outside, threatening the neighbor and waving the hatchet in the air.

The victim’s boyfriend was able to get the hatchet from Simonsen.

Police arrived on scene and during the arrest Simonsen kicked and scratched an officer.

She is being held on a bond of $10,000.
