ROCK ISLAND, Illinois-- A group of Quad City football players got the chance to play the game the old fashioned way Sunday, August 28.
Players from Rock Island and Moline played a flag football game as if it was set in the 1920's. Players wore period uniforms and replica leather helmets and even executed plays as written in a football handbook from the decade.
Quad City football historians Chris Zimmerman and Simon Herrera organized the event to bring awareness to the pro football history at Douglas Park.
"We had Jim Thorpe, who played for the (Rock Island) Independents, George Halas who played for the Bears. The Bears have played here years ago, and some of the Green Bay legends as well," says Chris Zimmerman.
The game also featured a 1920's style melon football and music from the era as well.
