DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The art of cake decorating got competitive at NorthPark Mall. Hy-Vee held its annual Extreme Cake Challenge Tuesday, August 23, 2016, where cake designers in the Quad Cities area squared off in front of spectators.
In the challenge, participants are given three hours to decorate a specialty cake and 12 cupcakes. Their performances were to be judged based on technical appearance, icing appearance, and level of difficulty.
"While the competition is fun and spirited, we at Hy-Vee take pride in the overall showcase of talent on display,” said Ray Doughan, assistant vice president of bakery operations at Hy-Vee. “Our cake designers are some of the most creative in the business and are sure to put on a show that will amaze.”
The top three decorators will get to go to the company finals in Des Moines on Saturday, November 12. The top three finishers there will win $600, $300, and $200 based on their placement. An additional $500 will be given for a 'Decorators' Choice' award.
