DAVENPORT, Iowa — Cub Scouts from Pack 258 in Rock Island sprinkled flower petals on the grass before Saturday night's ceremony. In the distance, 104 United States flags waved in the wind, each representing a list of men and women killed in battle since 9/11.

The Tribute to our Fallen is an annual event hosted by the Mississippi Valley Patriots. It honors those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The cub scouts were at Davenport Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon for a special lesson from two active duty United States Marines.

"Between flag etiquette, how to handle the flag, how to hold it, treat it the way it's supposed to be treated, as well as this event - trying to bring in and capture what this event actually stands for and ways they can actually bring that out," said Sergeant John Broussard, United States Marine Corps.

Sergeant Broussard is in his seventh year with the United States Marine Corps. He spent a couple hours with the group of fourth grade cub scouts, teaching them how to properly handle a United States Flag as well as telling them about Medal of Honor recipients.

"It's cool that they wanted to join the Army and make a difference for the country, but it's sad that they sacrificed their life," said 9-year-old Tyler Wilden, a Cub Scout in Pack 258.

Later in the evening, Sergeant Broussard represented the US Marine Corps at the Tribute to our Fallen ceremony.

"To me, it's just, I think it's amazing. It's something I'm excited to take part in every year. Something I want to instill in my own children," said Sergeant Broussard.

Tribute to our Fallen started in 2004, solely dedicated to honoring military in Iraq and Afghanistan along with the first responders and civilians who were killed on 9/11. Since 2008's event, Tribute to our Fallen has expanded to honoring veterans of all eras, firefighters, and law enforcement.
