Wisconsin farmer may have coolest cows in the country

The water wall not only helps keep the cows cool, but saves about 15 gallons a day of water compared to the old system.

CASCO, Wisconsin — A Wisconsin farmer may have the coolest cows in the country. Kinnard Farms has about 6,000 dairy cows to keep cool during the summer heat, so workers developed a radiator system.

The water wall is made out of recycled cardboard and runs the entire length of the barn. Because cows have no sweat glands and are unable to cool themselves, hot summer days can lead to a drop in the amount of milk they produce.

"It's a pretty simple concept, it is literally, we're using air moving through flowing water and evaporating the water off to get the temperature down to about a 21-degree difference from outside ambient air temperature...so it's very much like sitting underneath a shade tree after you've come out of a swimming pool, basically in the middle of summer," said Lee Kinnard, farm owner.

Kinnard says another benefit of the water wall is the drastic reduction in water usage compared to the farm's old cooling system. This saves 15 gallons of water each day.
