MOLINE, Illinois-- It's a family tradition in the Peterson household. It's like a game, sitting down together comparing advertisements from various stores to see who can find the best deals on school supplies.

"It would be easier if we just went to a store and did it all at one time. If we do it this way, then we get to do it together, and we get the best bargains we can," says Becca Peterson.

Abe Peterson will be a second grader in the Moline School District at the end of August. And mom Becca has learned some tricks to saving money along the way. And now, it's time to put this self proclaimed bargain master mom to the test.

Becca's goal today in the Walgreens on 16th Street in Moline is to spend less than $30.

Besides comparing prices and making stops at different stores, Becca looks for deals throughout the year so she's not spending money all at once.

"We do things like get new shoes in the fall, shoes in the spring. And water bottles, you need five or six of those throughout the year, so I try to stock up when I find sales," says Becca.

Also, Becca says new isn't always better.

"We can always reuse his pencil box and things like that," says Becca.

Mom says this year for her second grader, she plans to spend less than $150 before the first day of school. That's including school supplies, registration fees and other odds and ends like clothes.

"I just want him to enjoy school and enjoy the process and develop a love of learning that I think I had as a kid," says Becca.

She's spending more time with her family and spending less cash. It's a win win for this bargain hunting team.
