Rock Island man accused of using little girl to shoplift

A Rock Island man is under arrest after he was accused of shoplifting from a store in Davenport, but how he did it, shocked one store owner.

DAVENPORT, Iowa - A Rock Island man is under arrest after he was busted for shoplifting from a store in Davenport, but how he did it, shocked one store owner.

It was a first for store owner Brian Handley.

"The gentleman stood here and then called the young girl over to block our cameras," said Handley.

Handley saw on surveillance video how he says a customer used a young girl to steal from his store, Computer Evolution in Davenport.

"He basically used her to kind of shield from the cameras, but you can see him take off the shelf and put it into a bag," said Handley.

It wasn't until Monday, July 15th, when Handley was doing inventory that he found out items had been taken. Handley was shocked to see how it went down; he was even more shocked when he says he saw the same man from the video come back into the store on Tuesday.

"I told him he could pay for the stuff right then or hand it back to me right now and he didn`t have it with him and he didn`t have any money to pay for it," said Handley.

Police say that man is Ricky Rains. He tried to run from the store when Handley called police. Officers track Rains down and arrested him for theft.

Handley says Rains told him the little girl in the photo was his daughter and that needed money to pay for food.

Handley said he's not buying it and can't believe he used his daughter to walk away with a mouse and a software disc, "That's what's really, really sad and that's what I think really struck a nerve with me."
