YARMOUTH, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a fish kill near the headwaters of Big Creek in Des Moines County.

The total number of fish killed was 130 and included green sunfish, bullheads, Johnny darters, minnows and white suckers.

The cause of the fish kill was determined to have been from a landowner using fungicide who disposed of around 40 gallons of the chemical near the creek. Heavy rains caused the chemical to flow into the creek, killing the fish.

Water samples from Big Creek are still being analyzed. The IDNR is still contemplating whether enforcement actions are appropriate.
