Turmeric powder recalled from Big Lots stores for high lead levels

High lead levels were found in a lot of ground turmeric powder made by Gel Spice, Inc., according to a statement from the Food and Drug Administration.

The recalled product, Fresh Finds Ground Turmeric Powder, was sold at Big Lots stores all over the country.  The recall affects the turmeric powder packaged in 3.75 oz. PET jars. It has a code of B/B 03/08/19 and B/B 05/18/19 on the neck of the container.  The package also has a UPC code of 81026-01230.

The high lead levels were discovered during routine sampling and analysis, the statement said.

The FDA said that no illnesses have been reported in connection with the turmeric powder.  Elevated levels of lead in the body can cause health problems like delayed development and learning deficiencies.
