Illinois Governor pushing for term limits for lawmakers

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner travels the state to talk about his push for term limits for Illinois lawmakers.

COAL VALLEY, Illinois - Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner said the people of Illinois need a better government representing them.

"We can`t let the special interest groups and the career politicians that control Springfield dictate terms for the people of Illinois," said Rauner.

Governor Rauner made his way around the state to talk about his push for term limits on lawmakers.

"I believe anyone in state-wide office should serve the most 8 years, just like George Washington did when he founded America and I've agreed that for legislators they can be 10 years," said Rauner.

Some Illinois voters believe elected officials should understand the people they are representing.

"They`ve come from the community they know and understand the community," said Rock Island resident Russel Christ.

The longest serving lawmaker in Illinois is Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan with 44 years.

Not too far behind is Democratic Senate President John Cullerton with 36 years.

The longest serving Republican is State Representative David Leitsch with 27 years in office.

"The term limits (issue) is critically important. It will change the culture of our state government," said Rauner.

The governor wants lawmakers to pass an amendment to put term limits on the ballot and he's asking voters to contact their representatives.

If passed it will be on the 2018 general election ball when Governor Rauner will also be up for re-election.
