GLENWOOD, Iowa — A RAGBRAI cyclist died Sunday morning, July 24, near Glenwood after a collision with a pickup truck, reports the Des Moines Register. The accident happened at the two-mile marker of U.S. Highway 34.

Glenwood is where the annual weeklong RAGBRAI bike ride across the state begins.

The man was riding his bike when it was hit from behind around 6:40 a.m.

RAGBRAI had already planned to hold their first ever "Mile of Silence," to remember those rider who were killed and injured in bicycle accident, reports WHO. Iowa had already seen eight bicycle fatalities in 2016. That's double this time last year, according to the Iowa Bicycle Coalition.

The 421-mile ride was scheduled to start in Glenwood Sunday morning and will end at the Mississippi River in Muscatine on July 30.
