CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago judge has sentenced a man to 90 years in prison in the 2011 shooting death of a pregnant teenager whose baby was saved but severely brain damaged.
Timothy Jones, 23, was previously convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of Charinez Jefferson, 17, as she was walking from a store in the city’s Marquette Park neighborhood. Charinez died. Her son was left unable to see, talk, walk or breathe.
Charinez’s mother died of cancer four months ago. But prosecutors read a letter from her at Jones’ sentencing Monday. In it, Debbie Jefferson told Jones to “stop a minute and think about the lives you destroyed.”
Authorities said Jones opened fire on a group of rival gang members that Charinez was walking with on Aug. 16, 2011.
