Security video reveals clues in officer-related Davenport shooting

“Right as we were walking out, shots go off,” recalled witness Craig West.

DAVENPORT, Iowa - Security video footage shot from a camera mounted on the roof of the Super Saver Tobacco & Liquor store on Rockingham Road captured the moment a suspect vehicle rammed into a Davenport police car and sped off, with at least one officer drawing his weapon and firing after the fleeing car.

The incident that eventually turned into an officer-involved shooting - after the driver of the fleeing vehicle later checked into an area hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound - began in the 1300 block of Ripley Street around 11:40 Monday night. The confrontation caught on the convenience store surveillance camera occurred about two miles down the road on Rockingham.

Craig West, who was leaving work from Mid-American Glass across the street from the Super Saver, said he and other workers were startled by the sound of the suspect vehicle ramming into the cop car.

"Tires squealing," West said.  "I heard a crunch, like an accident.  Right as we were walking out, shots go off."

The security video showed an officer drawing his weapon, just after the impact.

West estimated hearing six to eight shots.

"There's a bunch of gunfire going on down at the Super Saver," added another witness, Todd Kroeger. "Bunch of flashing red lights, people just scattering around."

Somehow the suspect managed to drive off the curb and get away.

"I heard them yelling, get on the ground, stuff like that," West said.

The car was later found near 500 Pine Street.

The Scott County Sheriffs Department and Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation are investigating. The two Davenport Police Department officers involved remain on administrative leave. Investigators say two police officers apparently fired on the suspect after he drove into their squad car.

Under department policy, both officers were placed on administrative leave, as is protocol for all officer-involved shootings.

"We want to do it right," said Sheriff Dennis Conard.  "Make sure that the results of our investigation are available to the public, so they know exactly what happened."

The suspect remains hospitalized in Davenport, listed Tuesday morning in stable condition with a non-life threatening injury.
