BURLINGTON, Iowa — Suspects accused of an armed robbery in a Burlington neighborhood tried to outrun police and ended up crashing into a garage, police said in a statement.

Someone reported being robbed at gunpoint while walking near14th and Locust Streets, according to a statement from the Burlington Police Department.  The victim was approached by two black males and one Hispanic male, shortly after midnight on Monday, July 18, 2016.

“One of the males held a handgun to the victim’s chest and demanded the items in his pockets,” read the police statement. The victim followed orders, and the three suspects reportedly left in a small red vehicle.

Officers ended up finding the red vehicle in question, and then were led on a chase, said police.  The vehicle ended up hitting a garage in the 1400 block of Grove Street, less than a half-mile north from where the robbery was reported.

“After a brief foot pursuit, officers were able to detain two of the three individuals,” read the statement.

Police said a handgun that matched the description of the one used in the robbery was recovered from the vehicle.

Olijuan Dashawn Abraham, age 18, was charged with first degree robbery and was held in the Des Moines County Jail without bond.  There was no word on any charges for the other person who was detained.

Police said more arrests were expected.
