Tuition may go up for students attending public universities in Iowa.

The Iowa Board of Regents was set to meet Monday, July 18, 2016 to decide whether or not tuition would rise, starting in the fall of 2016, according to their meeting agenda.

The Board had requested a $20.34 million increase, but the 2016 General Assembly approved only $6.3 million. This increase would help cover that gap.

“The proposed tuition increase will assist the universities in managing inflationary expenses, meeting mandated salary, and directing these revenues to support teaching and student needs,” read the proposal.

If approved, the tuition hike would be prorated based on credit hour for part-time undergraduates.  At University of Iowa, the tuition would stand at $7,178.  At Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa it would be $7,148.

The increases would range between $50 and $800, depending on student status.

The board was meeting at 1 p.m. at Iowa State University.
