Scott County GOP preps for increased campaigning

DAVENPORT, Iowa — For Judy Davidson, Chairwoman of the Scott County Republican Central Committee, campaigning for Iowa's GOP candidates is a constant.

"We are always working hard to find volunteers," said Davidson, who has been involved in local republican politics for over 15 years.

Since the Iowa Primary Election back in June, the Scott County Republicans' office moved to a new location in Davenport. In the weeks leading up to the Republican National Convention, June 18 - June 21, county republicans have started working on 'get out the vote' efforts for not only for the presidential race, but for the congressional race and local races on the November ballot.

Davidson said Iowa plans to have the largest ever ground force for the presidential election. That includes door-knockers and callers - all of whom will be volunteers. The amount of volunteers helping with local GOP campaign efforts is unclear.

"It varies from day to day, and it varies sometimes also on the weather. We found that a couple weekends ago, on a Saturday, when it was very hot those 100-degree days, it was a little bit tougher to get some volunteers to go out and get door-knocking," said Davidson, who is a volunteer herself.

There is one paid staffer who works through the Republican National Committee. Davidson says Trumps Campaign and the Republican National Committee works together to hire staff throughout the country and Iowa.

"I know they're working very hard on staffing and I will say that Iowa will have more boots on the ground for this presidential election than ever before," said Davidson.

Davidson said the extra effort is needed to ultimately win the presidential election.

"Iowa has always been a swing state, and so in order for the Trump ticket to win Iowa and for our down candidates to also win Iowa, we will need some more boots on the ground, and we will not refuse that we will certainly welcome their willingness to help," said Davidson.
