DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines teacher and basketball coach who saw sex crime charges against him dismissed earlier this year is now suing police, saying they maliciously sought to prosecute him.

Gerald "Tig" Johnson's lawsuit filed Friday says police mismanaged the case, the Des Moines Register reports.

Johnson, 47, is a special education teacher and girls' basketball coach at Roosevelt High School. He was charged late last year with sexual exploitation by a school employee and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse.

Prosecutors said a school surveillance video backed up a 16-year-old student's account that Johnson had called her out of class and had sexual contact with her in his classroom. But the digital video was lost, and the charges were dismissed earlier this year.
