MT. PLEASANT, Iowa — Two days before speaking at the Republican National Convention, Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa met with farmers for a roundtable discussion at the Henry County Farm Bureau.

Ms. Ernst is speaking during primetime at the Republican National Convention on Monday, July 18th at 9:36 p.m. CST.

"I will be focusing on national security. I am very passionate about protecting our homeland and protecting our citizens as they work and travel abroad," said Ms. Ernst, a former Lieutenent Colonel in the Iowa National Guard.

Last week, Ms. Ernst met with presumptive republican nominee, Donald J. Trump. When asked about his demeanor, Ernst said she has pushed back on some of the things that Mr. Trump has said in the past, but that over time, he has grown.

"He has become a little more finessed, and I think, though, he is also speaking for many Americans that feel their voice has been shuttered for way too long, in a politically correct environment," said Ms. Ernst, who believes that some issues facing the country require the sort of polarization and brashness that Mr. Trump has exuded.

"We have a lot of big issues facing the United States. I'll give one example, ISIS," said Ms. Ernst. "The FBI Director has stated we have ISIS and its affiliates in all 50 states, that includes Iowa."

Ms.  Ernst is over halfway through her 99-county tour of Iowa.
