Illinois residents will now be eligible for civil service jobs in Bettendorf, following action taken by the city council last week.

Previously, Iowa law required government workers to live in Iowa, but the state legislature amended the statute, allowing out-of-state residents to be employed as civil service employees. Bettendorf department heads decided to change the city's ordinance after the new Iowa law went into effect on July 1, expecting it to increase the size and quality of its applicant pool.

"It does get hard to find qualify people," said city attorney Kristine Stone.  "Lots of times when someone who interviews finds out they might have to move, they disqualify themselves from the position. So this will open up those types of applicant pools."

Moline, Rock Island and Davenport all still require residency for city civil service jobs.
