Multi-vehicle crash backed up I-80, sent several to hospital

A four-vehicle crash two miles west of Geneseo sent multiple people to the hospital and caused serious traffic back ups on I-80 Friday, July 8.

GENESEO, Illinois — A four-vehicle crash two miles west of Geneseo sent multiple people to the hospital and caused serious traffic back ups on I-80 Friday, July 8.

Illinois State Police say a Chevrolet driven by Casey Wilson was traveling eastbound on I-80 near mile marker 18 around 5:20 p.m. when it struck the back of a Subaru Carryall, causing a chain reaction with two other vehicles. All involved were conscious on scene, but multiple people were taken to Illini Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

June Simon, 70, was flown to a Peoria hospital after she was examined at Illini.

I-80 was closed to traffic for one hour, says Illinois State Police, but WQAD viewers have said traffic was backed up for several hours before returning to normal.

Wilson, 32, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash. The crash is still under investigation.
