Bettendorf neighbors desperate for help with flooding problem

Bettendorf neighbors want help from the city after heavy rain caused flooding in the backyards and damaged their property.

BETTENDORF, Iowa - Bettendorf neighbors want help from the city after heavy rain caused flooding in the backyards and damaged their property.

When it rains it pours for Sarah Dusenberry. The proof can be found in her backyard.

"It basically creates a river that goes on both sides of our property," said Dusenberry.

Dusenberry moved to her home in Bettendorf off of Salem Court two years ago and soon learned there was a problem.

"We weren't informed there was a drainage issue or any flooding on the house whatsoever," said Dusenberry.

There's a water drain behind her house that runs through her backyard and when heavy rain comes she says her backyard floods. Her pool fills up with muddy drain water and parts of the yard gets torn up. Her garage also doesn't escape the water.

"I want to improve the value of my home, but if the city's rain water is going to be rushing through my yard, I don't really see a point in trying to even live here. You almost kind of want to move," said Dusenberry.

Her neighbor, Dennis Thompson's yard floods too. He blames it on the city's drainage pipe, they say it's too small for the amount of water flow that goes through it.

"It would go all the way up in our yard up past our fire pit, almost up our fountain," said Thompson.

Thompson says he's reached out to the city several times over the last couple of years. While the city says they've made improvements to the pipe, these residents say it wasn't enough.

"We're desperate for help and we're just not getting it," said Thompson.

Bettendorf's city administrator says the pipe is working fine and someone from the city will reach out to the residents.
