Police: Officers shoot, kill Iowa bank robbery suspect

State and federal law enforcement are investigating a bank robbery in the southeast corner of Iowa that led to the shooting death of a suspect.

FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) — State and federal law enforcement are investigating a bank robbery in the southeast corner of Iowa that led to the shooting death of a suspect.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says that a robbery was reported around 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Fort Madison Bank and Trust Co.

Arriving officers spotted a man running from the bank with an undisclosed amount of money and confronted him. Police say the man fired several shots in the direction of officers, hitting a patrol car. Officers say they returned fire, hitting the man once in the torso. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured.

Police have not yet released the man's name, or the names of the officers involved. The officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
