DUBUQUE, Iowa — What started out as a welfare check on a Dubuque man turned into a two-hour-long standoff with police.

Police found 36-year-old Ian M. Bonnette in his vehicle on Sky Blue Drive, located in the northeast part of town, around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2016, according to a statement from the Dubuque Police Department.  Bonnette got out of his vehicle armed with a rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest.

“Despite being ordered to disarm himself, the subject remained armed and retreated into a nearby wooded area,” read the statement.

After about two hours, a negotiator was able to convince Bonnette to drop his weapon and surrender to police, the statement said.   Police ended up finding more firearms and ammo in his vehicle.

Bonnette was taken to a nearby hospital, where he stayed until Wednesday, June 29, according to police.  He was immediately taken into custody once he was released.

Bonnette was charged with carrying a weapon and interference with official acts, the statement said. He was held in the Dubuque County Jail on $26,000 bond.
