Accidents skyrocket on John Deere Road due to construction traffic

The stretch at 38th Street and John Deere saw 29 accidents in 2015 when construction began.

MOLINE, Illinois — A busy stretch of John Deere Road in Moline has seen the number of accidents skyrocket and police tonight are warning drivers to watch out.

The stretch at 38th Street and John Deere had two accidents in 2012, 3 in 2013 and 2014 and 29 in 2015. That's when construction started.

"In 2015 we had this reconfiguration , we jumped to 29. And, we've already see 20 so far this year", said Scott Williams, spokesperson with the Moline Police Department.

"It is dangerous right now because we've seen this huge increase in crashes. Once it's fixed, it won't be a problem, but right now people need to know the way it's configured", Wiliams said.

Some say the intersection desperately needs a stop light and acceleration lane, and signs that alert oncoming cars that a likely traffic back-up is ahead.

The city says it has spoken with the Illinois Department of Transportation. A call late Thursday afternoon was not returned to WQAD-TV.
