An Iowa cosmetology school with a campus in Davenport has settled in a consumer fraud lawsuit.

La’ James International College was accused of being deceitful and unfair in their marketing, enrollment, and instruction, according to a statement from Attorney General Tom Miller.

“This settlement addresses certain past practices by LaJames’ that we allege were simply unfair to many of its students,” Miller said.  The settlement is expected to help “level the playing field for current and future students,” as well as monitor the school going forward.

The college will have to change its business practices, submit to outside oversight, and forgive $2.1 million in student debts, the statement said.  In addition, the school will have to pay $550,000 to the state that will go toward partial refunds to current and former students.

The company didn’t admit wrongdoing in the settlement.
