Illinois has one day left to take action on budget before fiscal year ends

Despite high hope, still no action taken on Illinois budget.

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois - Action in Springfield isn't expected until Thursday now. That's the last day of the fiscal year.

Legislative leaders met privately with Governor Bruce Rauner all day on Wednesday.

Lawmakers say a pair of short-term budget bills are being drafted, including a stop gap budget for essentials services and a K-12 funding bill that would ensure school will open this fall.

East Moline Superintendent Kristin Humphries was at the Capitol and says even a short-term deal would be a relief, "First and foremost we’d have a budget right now Friday is the first day of the fiscal year so its dangerous ground and just knowing we’d have a budget is a big deal."

The legislature will be back in session, Thursday, June 30th at 10 am. Local lawmakers say they're hoping those bills will be written and ready for a vote.
