DAVENPORT, Iowa -  It's not just the violence concerning some in the community, but that it seems to involve young people in the community.  One community group thinks more needs to be done to reach out to teens.

It was an honest discussion about a sad reality, "We`ll be standing over a short casket of a young lady cut down in the blossom of her life," said Reverend Dwight Ford.

The concerns come after recent violence involving young people. A 15-year-old girl from Davenport shot and killed and an armed robbery made at a couple of gas stations, both within a week. The suspects ages, 13, 14 and 22.

"I am so frustrated with what's going on in our community and the only question that I have is how are these babies getting guns? I know they can`t go to no corner store and pick them up," said Davenport resident, Tracy White.

Community members came to the Boots on the Ground meeting wanting answers.

"Some of the things we`re seeing are legitimate people who have the ability purchase weapons who are actually providing weapons to people who shouldn`t have those weapons," said one Davenport police officer.

The group also threw out possible solutions, from offering more after school programs, to building better relationships with the youth, not just inside the home but in the community.

The Boots on the Ground coalition was formed after the numerous shots fired incident in the community. The group holds community meetings every fourth Monday of the month at United Neighbors in Davenport.
