Family members killed in collision with Amtrak train heading to LA from Chicago

Five people were killed when a train crashed into a van in Colorado on Sunday, authorities said.

Five family members were killed, including three children, when a train crashed into a van in Colorado, authorities said.

According to a report by KDVR, the family was headed to church on Sunday morning, June 26, 2016.

The van's right side was hit after it failed to yield the right of way to the train, Colorado State Patrol said in a news release.

One occupant, a 4-year-old, was airlifted to Denver Hospital with injuries police described as serious. KDVR reported that she was the only family member to survive; her parents and three sisters were killed.

There were 286 passengers aboard the Southwest Chief Line, traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles, according to KDVR. No train passengers or crew members were hurt.  The train began traveling again at 5:25 p.m., about eight hours after the crash.

Authorities said the van was not stopped on the railroad tracks.

The crash happened about three miles north of Trinidad, Colorado.

CNN contributed to this report.
