Police say two people died in a crash on Interstate 74 near Orion.

HENRY COUNTY, Illinois -- Police say two people died in a crash on Interstate 74 near Orion.

Only one vehicle was involved in the crash Monday, June 27, 2016.  It happened around 2:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway near mile marker 17. The Illinois State Patrol and Orion Fire Department were on scene.

The Illinois State Patrol said the driver, in a 2004 Buick four-door, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the embankment of an overpass.  The spokesperson said two people died in the crash.

The driver and passenger were later identified as 78-year-old Veva A. Herschberger and 81-year-old Melvin J. Herschberger, from Kalona, Iowa, according to the Illinois State Police.

Traffic was down to one lane at the crash scene.  Click here to see traffic conditions.

Construction workers were working in the eastbound lanes nearby on Monday.
