CLARION, Iowa (AP) — Two former high school football players in northern Iowa have taken plea deals in their hazing cases.

Court records two 18-year-olds were sentenced earlier this month after pleading guilty to assault. Both had been charged with sexual abuse after they were accused last October of hazing freshmen on the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team in Clarion. Those charges were dropped in exchange for the older teens’ guilty pleas to the assault charges.

The records say one was given two 10-day suspended jail sentences, informal probation and fined $130. The other received a deferred judgment and a year of probation. Under a deferred judgment, his conviction will be erased if he successfully completes probation.

Another football player accused of hazing is being prosecuted in juvenile court.
