BLUE GRASS, Iowa -- A group of volunteers from John Deere worked with campers at YMCA's Camp Abe Lincoln in Blue Grass, Iowa to plant a vegetable garden. It was all part of United Way of the Quad Cities' Health Day of Caring on Tuesday, June 21, 2016.

The goal was to teach kids about farm to table while incorporating the Y's values -- caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

"Kids don't understand where their food comes from," Camp Executive Director Nick Martinez said.

The day allowed John Deere employees to give back to kids who live in their area.

"It just makes you feel really good that you're able to help contribute," Amy Asselin said.

Volunteers hope planting seeds in the ground will also plant seeds in the campers' minds.

"For a child to pick a tomato ripe from the vine and eat it verses getting it from the store is a new experience for them," Martinez said.

United Way also had groups working on projects in New Liberty, Iowa, Davenport, Iowa, and Illinois City, Illinois.
