Amid reports of female joggers being groped, police used an undercover officer to conduct surveillance in Davenport, Iowa.

During the investigation, a female officer who was "part of the surveillance operation" was assaulted near the 2300 block of West 3rd Street, according to a statement from the Davenport Police Department.  This led to the arrest of 34-year-old John Benavidez.

"After the assault a foot pursuit ensued and an officer injured his hand while taking Benavidez in custody," read the statement.

Benavidez was charged with assault with the intent to commit sexual abuse, interference with official acts, and drug possession.  He was taken to the Scott County Jail and was held on $20,000 bond.

Both Davenport and Bettendorf Police Departments helped with the investigation.

Police said they do not believe there was any connection between this incident and another at Glen Armil Park on Wednesday, June 15, where a female jogger escaped a potential abduction.
