MOLINE, Illinois - Kris Rowell takes her dog for a walk along the river every day and doesn't think much about the possibility of being attacked.

"I've just never thought about it a lot, I think more of it because of my daughters age because I'm older and I just don't think they're gonna bother me," said Rowell.

Instructor John Morrow with Morrow's Academy of Martial Arts said attackers are looking for people who may seem vulnerable and not paying attention.

Even if you're aware, it sometimes isn't enough, your safety is in your own hands.

"You always have your body and your mind, so if you can get the right mindset and get a little training it will always be there for you," said Morrow.

Something that women like Kris Rowell said she'll now need to keep in mind.

"Maybe just means that we need to be more diligent," said Rowell.
