In light of the Orlando shooting, Per Mar Security Services is seeing an increase in inquiries from local businesses looking to boost their own security.

"Yeah, definitely," said Brian Duffy, president of electronic security. "We get calls both from people who don't currently have security measures, and then also from our existing customers, wanting to know really what they can do."

Duffy said callers are most interested in ways to be proactive, such as providing active shooter training for employees or conducting background checks on applicants.

"Usually when something like just happened is committed, there's a history with that individual," said Duffy. "We can actually do screening so that they could check any prospective employees or current employees against global terrorist watch lists, so that would check Interpol, that would also check the FBI. A lot of people don't utilize that, but once they become aware of it, there's a high level of interest after events like what just happened."

And while it's difficult to think about, tragedy across the country may help local businesses prepare for the worst.

"It's unfortunate that with what we do, it's incidents like what just happened that make people really think about how to get their own ducks in a row and really have the best practices they possibly can," said Duffy.

Per Mar also offers security officers for businesses and events.
