Overload of visitors could force changes at two Illinois state parks

Officials say they are working on new park rules to reduce problems in the future.

OGLESBY, Illinois — An overload of visitors could force a major change at two popular Illinois parks.

Starved Rock park officials say a recent increase in visitors has created litter, vandalism and safety concerns. Over the Memorial Day weekend, workers were forced to shut down the park after a flood of visitors began parking in illegal areas.

The problem spilled into nearby Matthiessen State Park. Officials say they are working on new park rules to reduce problems in the future.

Starved Rock State Park drew 2.5 million visitors last year.
