(CNN) — Two people were shot on the UCLA campus Wednesday, university officials said. What was first thought to be an active shooter situation is now believed to be the result of a murder-suicide, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck told reporters.

There were no suspects on the loose, he said. Beck said the situation was contained and a weapon was found at the scene where the two men died.

Police received reports of an active shooter in or near the engineering building, Los Angeles Police Officer Tony Im said.

Officials put the campus on lockdown as authorities investigate the incident at Boelter Hall. Officers with long guns patrolled the streets of the campus of more than 40,000 students.

Agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were headed to the scene.

CNN senior law enforcement analyst Tom Fuentes said locking down a large university in an urban area is a “monumental task.” UCLA’s engineering building is in the middle of a very densely populated part of Los Angeles.

This is the final week of classes for this term at UCLA, according to the registrar’s office. Final exams are scheduled for next week.
