MAYWOOD, Ill. (AP) — A former Illinois state trooper convicted of killing his girlfriend has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Prosecutors say Brian Himber, 35, of Chicago was sentenced Wednesday for the shooting death of 29-year-old Tracy Mays of Joliet in July 2012. He was convicted of first-degree murder in January. He must serve all of his sentence.
Prosecutors say a few hours after arriving at a graduation party in Westchester, the off-duty trooper fired a .380 caliber handgun and struck Mays several times as she sat on a porch. She later died at a hospital.
Himber also shot himself once in the chin but has since recovered from that injury.
