ROCK ISLAND, Illinois — Some people spent Saturday, May 28, with their four-legged friends at the dog park in Rock Island's Hassel-Roth Park.

The dog park was named Saturday in honor of Eleanor Wallace, a former park board member. Her goal was to open the Quad Cities' first dog park, which happened back in 1999.

Now, almost 10 years later, leaders say the city needs more advocates like Wallace to keep parks in Rock Island strong.

"We have some great facilities, we do need people to continue to volunteer their time and dedicate their money and develop friends of our parks because we do need that partnership to make things happen and we're getting it done in Rock Island," said John Gripp from Rock Island Parks and Recreation.

The dog park will be open from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Memorial Day Monday.
