Graduating RIHS seniors return to their elementary school to inspire

Just days away from their graduation, some Rock Island High School seniors returned to their elementary school to inspire the next generation of students.

Just days away from their graduation, some Rock Island High School seniors returned to their elementary school to inspire the next generation of students.

On Thursday, May 26, 2016, the Rocky seniors boarded a bus for Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. Once there, they donned their caps and gowns for a "Grad Walk," parading through their old's school's hallways, cafeteria, and playground.

Younger students lined the hallways, greeting the seniors with signs, cheers, and high fives.

"It was really cool, because I really want to graduate from high school, and it was just so cool to see people that were older. It was just awesome," said fourth grader Cienna Reed.

For many of the graduating seniors, the walk was a chance to look back.

"Life goes by quickly, it really does. It just flashes before your eyes," said senior Jade Findlay.

But the first-time event was also an opportunity to show the grade school students how much pride and joy comes with high school graduation.

"I didn't really pay attention much in school when I was their age, and now I know that education is really important. I know better now," said senior Derick Riesebieter. "I think it would just give me a little sense of hope that graduation is possible."

Thomas Jefferson Principal Mike Nitzel said he hopes the Grad Walk becomes an annual tradition.

Rock Island seniors will graduate on Saturday at the iWireless Center.
