MILAN, Illinois – A blown tire may have caused a crash that ended with a tanker overturned on Highway 67 in Milan, Illinois.
Neighbors said the front-left tire blew on the tanker truck as it was northbound on Highway 67 at about 12:45 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2016. The rig traveled into the median where it overturned, and it came to rest on its side in the southbound lanes, just north of 127th Avenue West.
Police at the scene confirmed the front-left tire was blown.
The driver appeared to be conscious and talking to first responders at the scene of the crash; the driver was transported by ambulance from the wreck. The driver was the only person in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved.
Southbound traffic was detoured onto a nearby service road to get around the wreck. The southbound lanes remained blocked as of about 2:30 p.m.
There was no immediate sign of a spill from the tank; it was carrying waste water and there were no hazardous materials concerns according to Lt. Cody Schroeder of the Coyne Center Fire Department. The tanker was owned by Mid-America Pipe Services, Schroeder said.
There was a small oil spill on the road as a result of the wreck.
Schroeder said there was some damage to a culvert as a result of the crash. They hoped to reopen southbound lanes of the road by, or before, 4 p.m.
