Memorial Day will be celebrated Monday, May 30, 2016. Below are ceremonies that will honor veterans in the Quad Cities.
Milan
A ceremony will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 30th, at the Milan American Legion Post, 515 W. First Ave. in Milan. Major Phillip Moore of the U.S. Army Sustainment Command of the Rock Island Arsenal will speak in front of the Legion building.
Post officials will lay a wreath commemorating the service of veterans of all wars at the foot of a monument on the building’s front lawn as the Honor Guard fires a 21 gun salute. The public is invited to stay for lunch following the ceremony.
There is no cost for the lunch, but freewill donations are appreciated.
Rock Island
Members of the American Legion Post 200 and the VFW Auxiliary will be hosting a memorial service on the Rock Island County Courthouse lawn at 1 p.m. Monday, May 30. The service will be held near all of the veteran memorials on the east side of the Courthouse along 15th Street.
This ceremony is to commemorate the fallen soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice for this great country. Everyone is encouraged to attend and pay their respects.
Rock Island National Cemetery
The Memorial Day Ceremony will begin 10:45 a.m. Monday, May 30, at the Rock Island National Cemetery.
The ceremony will include patriotic music by the CASI New Horizons Band, chorus from the CASI Goldentones, honor salute by the Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 299, echo salute by Davenport American Legion Post 26 and Taps by John Adams.
A National salute will be performed by the Illinois National Guard, Alpha Battery, 2nd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery Regiment.
The public must enter through the Moline Gate and no parking will be available at the cemetery except for individuals that are bound to a wheelchair. Parking for all others will be available behind Memorial Park in the large lot. Buses will tranpsort visitors from the lot to the cemetery from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors should arrive early.
