The Democratic Party is already looking ahead to the general election, increasingly optimistic it can win in some unexpected states. Part of that strategy includes a victory in North Carolina, where Democrats hope to capitalize on the fight over the so-called "Bathroom Bill" that requires people to use the bathroom that corresponds with the sex stated on their birth certificate. It's a law many say is discriminatory against transgender men and women.
Democratic Party Political Director Raul Alvarilla explains, "I think that would be a good opportunity for us to look at what the state legislatures are doing and how do we get more Democrats activated and needing to go out and vote. With Trump at the top of the Republican ticket, we're going to make sure that we can play in as many states as we possibly can."
The last Democrat to win North Carolina was President Obama in 2008. Before that, Democrats hadn't won the state until 1976, when Jimmy Carter pulled out a victory.
Republicans are looking forward to the general election, too. The vetting process to select a Vice Presidential candidate for Donald Trump is expected to begin next week. That's according to a source with the presumptive Republican nominee's campaign. During the vetting process, Trump advisors will start going through files of potential candidates.
Trump has said he wants a running mate with political and government experience, to help him pass legislation. Potential running mates allegedly include former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and Iowa Senator Joni Ernst.
Former GOP Presidential Candidate Jeb Bush is offering his explanation of why Donald Trump is doing so well. He said Trump was able to tap into fears and pessimism felt by many Americans, while using his extraordinary skills to dominate the news cycle. Bush also said he's not blaming Trump voters for anything, although he is concerned.
Bush said, "What I fear is that people, kind of looking down their nose, will say the people that are supporting Donald Trump are a bunch of idiots. They're not. They're legitimately scared. They're fearful. They're not as optimistic for legitimate reasons and there should be respect for that. And on the other side, a similar respect needs to be shown."
