Davenport woman killed when car rear-ends semi on I-80 in Davenport

I-80 eastbound is closed between exits 295A to US 61 and 298 to I-74.

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- A deadly crash involving a car and a semi stopped traffic on Interstate 80 for several hours.

A semi-tractor trailer, owned by Swift Transportation, was stopped and had just started moving again eastbound on I-80 when a Cadillac CTS ran into the back of it, according to a statement from the Davenport Police Department.  The crash happened near mile marker 295 around 5:20 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2016.

"The semi-trailer was stopped on the interstate due to a large amount of traffic attempting to merge onto eastbound Interstate 80 from northbound Highway 61," police said in their statement.

Police said the Cadillac driver, later identified as 28-year-old Nicole R. Van Hamme from Davenport, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The semi driver was not hurt.

Initial reports indicate that the crash closed the roadway between exits 295A and 298.  Traffic was not moving again until around 8:20 p.m.
