CHICAGO (AP) — The city of Chicago is about to settle two more lawsuits stemming from alleged police misconduct, adding to the more than $500 million in payouts since 2004.
The City Council committee has endorsed a $2.2 million payment in the September 2005 shooting of Emmanuel Lopez. The 23-year-old unarmed janitor was shot 16 times following a hit-and-run fender bender and allegedly hitting an officer.
Officer Jason Van Dyke, who has pleaded not guilty in the 2014 shooting death of Laquan McDonald, wrote a report on the incident using a typed narrative handed him by detectives. Van Dyke later admitted he didn’t know where the detectives got their information.
Aldermen also recommended a $1 million settlement in the March 2013 shooting of Ryan Rogers. He was shot after leaving a home under surveillance in a cellphone robbery ring investigation.
Police claim he pinned an officer between his SUV and a minivan.
