Publix issues recall for cranberry nut mix due to listeria concerns

(CNN) — The grocery store chain Publix is issuing a recall for its prepackaged cranberry nut and seed mix.

In a news release, the grocery store said it’s concerned walnuts in the mix may have been contaminated with listeria, which can cause serious and fatal infections.

“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted product has been removed from all store shelves,” said Maria Brous, Publix’s spokeswoman. “To date, there have been no reported cases of illness.”

Customers can get a full refund if they return the product, Brous said.

Publix’s recall, which is voluntary, follows a Tuesday announcement by the FDA that United Natural Trading LLC was issuing a voluntary recall for walnuts.

The FDA says the recall is precautionary and that only one sample in a finished product tested positive for listeria.

Some of the products affected contained walnuts from Market Basket, Nature’s Promise, Woodfield Farms and Woodstock.

Last week, sunflower kernels and some frozen foods were recalled due to listeria.

Each year, an estimated 1,600 people get sick and 260 others die due to listeria infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Symptoms include fever, aches and sometimes gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea.
